Wet Rot

Wet rot is found in properties where there are high levels of moisture within the timber structure. Wet rot leads to timber decay and has the potential to cause a variety of structural problems. In many instances, the root cause of wet rot is due to a structural defect in the property like a collection of water on the timber or because the wall adjacent to the timber suffers from damp.

When treating wet rot, Tudor Remedial Services will also tackle any structural problems to prevent wet rot reoccurring in your property. Normally, damage from wet rot tends to only affect the timber but it can also affect other areas like the plaster and decorations.

How to identify wet rot?

If your property is suffering from wet rot, the timber will be spongy to touch (even through a coat of paint) and will be much darker than surrounding timber. If the timber is dry, there is a high chance that it will crack and crumble into very fine particles. If your roof has been damaged, there is a high chance rainwater can seep in and damage the roof timbers.

Wet Rot Specialists

How to prevent wet rot?

If you want to prevent wet rot, we advise customers to take note of damp walls and address the problem as soon as possible whether it is a missing/damaged damp proof course (dpc), a bridged dpc or a bridged cavity. If you suspect wet rot in your property, contact our office for a detailed survey.

We advise customers to inspect their roof space for any ingress of water entering the property. The water may be flowing underneath the tiles onto the timber structure which may be a distance away from any visible holes. When it rains, we suggest you view the roof with a torch, and you may see the water shining down the timber or standing out from the felt.

Wet rot tends to be found underneath the kitchen sink, washing basins, toilet, shower, and behind the washing machine and more. The timber has a high possibility to become saturated with water in these areas as a leak could go unnoticed for a considerable period of time.

Treatment

Tudor Remedial Services will firstly treat structural problems in your property to ensure the problem does not reappear. We advise customers if you discover wet rot in your structural timbers like roof trusses and floor joists, please contact our team today.

If applicable, we will remove and replace rotten timbers with new wood. On the other hand, if the affected area is of a small size, we will simply cut away the affected area and add a new timber piece. At Tudor Remedial Services, if we are unsure that the structural problem has been eliminated, we will treat the wet rot with the appropriate wet rot treatment.
